Knee Pain – Why Put Up With It?

Speaking as a Chiropractor, the knee (after the spine) is one of the most common sites of pain in the body.  Our knees take a great amount of force in the form of axial compression.  This exerts great pressure through our knees and their supporting structures i.e. the ligaments, tendons and cartilages.  At certain times during our gait cycle our whole body’s weight is transmitted through just one knee.

Whether through playing sports or through the ageing process our knees become an area prone to on-going pain.  When knee pain starts it limits our activities in life. When knee pain stops us from doing what we enjoy in life, then that is the time to act.

Chiropractic is a conservative management alternative to aggressive procedures such as surgery.  We can help patients look at their gait, posture and working/leisure activities.  We can highlight areas of improvement or areas of caution.

Chiropractic management is based on a full knee assessment producing a working diagnosis based on presenting symptoms, previous history, orthopaedic and neurological tests.  This will produce a clearer picture of the cause of pain and how to manage it.  Management plans are based around two pillars:-

i)               Correct pelvic alignment – a misalignment of the pelvis; produces increased loading through one knee increasing the wear and tear.  A quick set of pelvic tilt and rotational adjustments will re-align the pelvis, spreading load equally through the knees.

ii)              Pain management – a reduction of muscular spasms can be achieved utilising soft tissue work and specific isometric stretches.  Acupuncture can be used to reduce pain levels, blocking long existing pain pathways.

Together this integrated and tailored approach brings great relief to knee pain sufferers.  Don’t put it off.  Why live with pain?  Come and see us!
